Just south of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, lies the beautiful botanical gardens of Brookgreen Gardens. Stretching thousands of acres through South Carolina’s Lowcountry, this plantation turned garden offers the best in local nature, history, and entertainment.
Protected as a National Historic landmark, Brookgreen Garden’s estate has some of the most magnificent and oldest species of plants. All year long, visitors can walk along the miles of floral-lined paths trailing through the many gardens on the property including: the scenic Diana Garden, which highlights the beauty of native plants and flowers, and the Live Oak Allee Garden, displaying massive 300-year-old Oak trees.
In addition to its natural beauty, Brookgreen is also home to the largest and most comprehensive collection of American figurative sculptures in the country. On display in multiple gardens along your walk through Brookgreen are over 1,400 sculptures by artists dating from the early 1800s to the present. Stop to admire the skill and detail of these beautiful, historic masterpieces.
While taking in the beauty of the indigenous plant life, make time to wonder through the Brookgreen’s Wildlife Preserve. The Lowcountry Trail brings vistors through a number of live animal exhibits including: alligators, otters, and exotic birds in an open-air aviary. Stop, feed, and pet goats and horses at the stables along the way.
Throughout the year Brookgreen Garden also hosts a number of great, family friendly events. From June through August, those visiting the gardens can stop and relax beneath the Magnolia’s and Oaks after a day of exploring and listen local music during Brookgreen’s Cool Summer Evenings. This summer concert series is free with admission to the park and also has a number of kids activities to make sure everyone is happy.
